About Thursley History Society
The society was formed on April 6th 1991and at this time, the Society’s initial remit was to protect and record Thursley’s past for future generations. This would include storing artefacts and records of the Parish of Thursley and copies of relevant documents and research, to be held in a secure and safe archive.
Amongst the memberships proposals of this time were:
-
To obtain copies of the deeds of as many of the older properties in the village as possible.
-
To record, through the ages, the natural history and evolution of Thursley Common and its ponds with the related iron workings.
-
To record the elder residents of the village’s valuable memories and knowledge.
-
To record the numbers and positions of wells in the village.
-
To store information, documents and photographs donated from many of the older or recently deceased residents of the village.
Today, the Society’s remit is largely unchanged. A small committee keep the archives safe, intact and updated and it provides an insight into them by means of a monthly column in the Parish Magazine and on this website. The Society continues to display exhibitions for significant and pertinent occasions e.g., the last one being Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. It has an ongoing Oral History project in place, ensuring that residents memories are secure and available for future generations.

So, although much of the Society’s original intentions have been satisfied, it still retains a valuable relevance today in informing and reminding Thursley residents of their villages’ past. After all, our past is still, and always will be, the key to understanding ourselves.
